Lewis Freeman | Principal


Lewis Freeman has over 30 years of experience as a senior executive with and consultant to non-profit organizations. He has held senior management positions with the National Association of Manufacturers, the American Petroleum Institute and the Eisenhower Institute. He also served as Deputy Assistant to the Governor of Ohio, and for over 20 years was a Vice President with the Society of the Plastics Industry. While with SPI, Mr. Freeman's problem solving leadership resulted in the creation of the numerical identification system on plastic containers to facilitate their being recycled and the development of labels on 5-gallon containers to warn of the dangers of child drowning accidents. Both innovations continue to be widely used throughout the United States and beyond.

 

Mr. Freeman has also been President of the Employers Council on Flexible Compensation, a trade association representing the interests of employer-sponsored health care programs, and President of Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, the state's oldest professional opera company.

 

Mr. Freeman has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Affairs Council, a member of a U.S. Department of Commerce advisory committee on international trade and is a member of Phi Beta Delta, an honor society of international scholars. He holds a B.A. in History from Ohio State University and a Masters of Public Policy from George Mason University.

 


 

Frederick M. Peterson, PhD | Associate, Economics


Fred Peterson is President of Probe Economics LLC, an industrial economic consulting firm established in 1976. Dr. Peterson specializes in the use of models and other quantitative techniques to forecast industrial markets and to advise clients on strategy and tactics. He directs Probe's business research and consulting operations and is the principal author of the firm's monthly Chemical Outlook publication. In the public policy area, he has worked for several trade associations and government agencies, measuring economic impact and cost-benefit.

 

He was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland, an Instructor (Preceptor) at Princeton University, a Senior Staff Economist with the President's Council of Economic Advisers, a Staff Economist with the President's Council on Environmental Quality, a Sales Representative with Stauffer Chemical Company, and a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

 

Dr. Peterson has lectured globally, advised clients in various countries, and authored studies on world chemical demand, pricing, purchasing analysis, forecasting techniques and transfer pricing. He has testified on international trade matters before the U.S. International Trade Commission. He also serves as Guest Lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department at Cornell University.

 

Dr. Peterson has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University.

 


 

Thomas Rae Southall  | Associate, Communications & Marketing


Thomas Rae Southall spent 24 years in the Communications Department of The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI). As Director, Industry Information and Communications Services, he created and managed the association's literature sales marketing effort, led the staff Internet team that planned and implemented a 1,000-page website, and managed SPI's Information Center that fielded thousands of inquiries from people within industry and the general public. Mr. Southall also provided assistance to the association's government relations, communications and statistics departments, as well as the organization's more than 30 operating divisions. This work included developing several special brand programs, producing video programs, helping create and design SPI's "Fantastic Plastics Works" exhibition at Walt Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando, FL, and designing the association's logo.

 

Prior to joining SPI, Mr. Southall worked for the Senior Vice President for Associations with the public relations firm, Ruder, Finn & Rotman, Inc. He has also been involved in extensive freelance work in web and print graphic design, and on-line marketing and communications efforts for numerous clients, including the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the National Partnership for Highway Quality, the Federal Highway Administration, the International Sign Association, the Drikung Mahayana Center, the Bio-Process Systems Alliance, the Flexible Vinyl Alliance, VOICE (Sperryville, Va.) and performing artists and restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. He studied at the University of Virginia and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C.
